Enhancing Productivity with ADHD: Remembering Salah as a Muslim

Living with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) and adhering to the obligations of Salah (prayer) as a Muslim can pose unique challenges when it comes to being productive. However, by incorporating Islamic practices into your daily life, individuals with ADHD can boost their productivity while maintaining their spiritual connection. In this blog post, we will explore practical tips for increasing productivity with ADHD and discuss specific strategies to remember and prioritise Salah.

  1. Establish a Structured Routine

Creating a well-structured routine is vital for individuals with ADHD. As a Muslim, make Salah an integral part of your daily schedule. Set specific times for each prayer and allocate buffer periods to transition smoothly between tasks. By incorporating Salah into your routine, you can ensure that you allocate dedicated time for spiritual fulfilment while effectively managing your productivity. Make sure you know the Salah times the night before and plan ahead. Write them down and tick them off as you pray.

  1. Utilise Alarm Reminders

Individuals with ADHD often get absorbed in tasks and lose track of time. To remember Salah, set multiple alarms or reminders on your mobile phone or other devices. Choose alert tones that are soothing and distinctly associated with prayer. These reminders will prompt you to pause and engage in Salah, helping you maintain your connection with Allah and allowing for mental rejuvenation throughout the day.

  1. Incorporate Digital Tools

Take advantage of digital tools to assist you in remembering Salah. You can use the Google Calendar feature to import Salah times by following the steps outlined in this helpful video tutorial. This integration allows you to have Salah timings easily accessible and integrated into your daily schedule. This means you have Salah reminders side by side with your daily meetings.

  1. Explore Salah-focused Apps

There are several apps designed specifically to facilitate Salah management and reminders. One such app is MySalah (available for iOS), which not only provides accurate prayer times but also allows you to calculate missed prayers and tick off daily prayers. This is so important for those with ADHD as we often forget which prayers we've prayed. These apps can be invaluable in tracking your Salah progress and ensuring that you do not miss any obligatory prayers.

  1. Create Visual Reminders

Visual aids can play a significant role in remembering Salah. Place reminders strategically, such as sticky notes on your desk, fridge, or desk monitor. Write down prayer times in your daily planner/ a notepad and put it on your desk. This will reinforce the visual connection and serve as powerful reminders throughout the day.

  1. Establish Prayer Zones

Designate specific areas in your home or workplace as dedicated prayer zones. Create a clean, peaceful, and inviting space for Salah. Arrange prayer mats, a copy of the Qur'an, and other spiritual items to help set the atmosphere for prayer. Keep your prayer clothes within easy reach too. Having a designated space can act as a visual cue and encourage regular engagement in Salah.

7. Implement Positive Reinforcement

Positive reinforcement can be a powerful tool in remembering Salah and boosting productivity for individuals with ADHD. Set up a reward system for yourself to celebrate and acknowledge each successful Salah completion. It could be something as simple as giving yourself a small treat, taking a short break to engage in a favourite activity, or offering a prayer of gratitude after Salah. By associating positive rewards with Salah, you create a positive reinforcement loop that strengthens your motivation and helps you stay consistent in performing your prayers.

8. Form Accountability Partnerships

Accountability partnerships can significantly enhance your ability to remember and prioritise Salah. Seek out a fellow Muslim friend, family member, or community member who can join you in this journey. Share your commitment to Salah and request their support in holding you accountable. Regular check-ins, reminders, and shared progress can help keep you motivated and ensure that Salah remains a priority in your life. Having someone to share the experience with can also provide encouragement and create a sense of unity and camaraderie in your spiritual journey.

Managing ADHD can be challenging, but it is important to recognise and feel proud of your efforts. You're doing amazing! May Allah reward you for your effort.
